Fun Reading Activities

There are some fun activities that we can do with our children to make them interested in reading. When kids are having fun, it becomes easier to get them engaged in the world of literature. The best thing we can do is to guide and direct them to enjoy reading for themselves. Intrinsic motivation is much more lasting than external motivation. Reading will provide a solid foundation for their entire school career.

Let’s encourage our children’s love of books!

A fun way to dig into a story is to read it with your child and ask your child their favorite part of the story.  And either let them tell you or, better yet, ask them to write it if they can.

Another fun way to engage your child in the books you are reading with them is to play a guessing game. Each time you turn the book’s page, look at the pictures with your child and have them guess what they think might be going on at this point in the story. It can be exciting to see if they got it right because, sometimes, they might get it so wrong that it turns the book into a super silly story. And what is more fun than the giggles?

The joy of reading.

An activity that can aid in improving your child’s reading and make them feel more grown-up is cooking together from a cookbook. You can explain to your child that it is crucial to follow the recipe’s instructions and add the ingredients in the correct order. Your child can be in charge of reading the recipe’s directions to you as you prepare the dish together. You can assist them as needed, but they can also read the ingredient labels and differentiate between items like baking powder and baking soda. You might even allow them to correct your mistake if you accidentally select the wrong ingredient. This activity will leave them feeling intelligent and helpful.

Helping your child get excited about reading will raise their confidence. Your involvement will help increase their motivation to enjoy the adventures that wait for them in the books.

Encouraging creativity and introducing variety can motivate children to develop an interest in reading. Please visit the Educational  School Show for my summer reading magic shows.
