Back to School in Houston

The long summer vacation is coming to an end and getting back to school is just around the corner. Whilst it is great for the kids to have had some down time, enjoy some summer camps and maybe a family vacation too, it is also great to get back into a routine. However, this can be tricky when the kids have had so much time off. They may have been going to bed later, waking up later. How do you get back on track?

Bedtimes

If their usual bedtime has changed somewhat over the holidays, then start about a week before, gradually pulling that back.  Making that adjustment over a few days will be far less painful for both you and the kids and will mean by the time the school bell rings again, it is a smooth transition.

Get Organised

Make sure your child has everything they need for back to school in plenty of time and that it is ready in their school bag. Nobody wants a last minute rush on the first day back to find pencil cases etc.

Make Getting Ready into a Game

If your child can be a bit slow getting ready in the mornings, then turn it into a game. Make it into a race to see who can get ready first or perhaps set a timer so they race against the clock. This can start the morning off in a fun way and create good habits at the start of term.

Is your child nervous about back to school?

After a long break from the school routine it is perhaps only natural that some children will be nervous about returning.  Try keeping it really positive and upbeat. Talk to them about all the friends they will see and get to play with and how they will get to hear about their vacations too. Maybe plan some fun favourite activities for them to do when they get home from school, so they have something to look forward to. Keep any after school activities simple and low key for the first few weeks. Your child is likely to be quite tired when they first go back.

Keep things simple for you too

Getting back into the routine is not just tiring for the kids, it can be for you too. Keep the routine as simple as possible. Plan simple favorite meals for the first week and also take time for yourself too. After a busy summer vacation I’m sure you will need it!
